Understanding a Migraine Headache
Migraine headache can be difficult to define and can be poorly understood. We all understand it when our head hurts, but may not always know if the pain we are feeling is a migraine. We don’t all feel pain in the same way, but there are features of a migraine that are distinct. The migraine type headache rarely occurs suddenly. There is a typical buildup pattern that can last several days and includes signs or symptoms such as fatigue and frequent yawning, stiffness in the neck and shoulders, possible mood changes and possible constipation.
Signs and Symptoms of a Migraine Headache
Some people experience an aura with the migraine, most do not. The aura occurs due to involvement of the nervous system and can be intense. Many aura sufferers report visual disturbances like flashes of light and changes in vision. You can feel that things are moving around you when they are still. You may have sensations of being touched. Other signs of the aura include unclear speech and difficulty expressing what you are thinking and feeling. Some particular symptoms may include: Blurry Vision or Loss of Vision; Numbness or Tingling in your arms, legs, hands and feet; Hearing Sounds and Noises that aren’t there; Feeling of Weakness or Numb Sensations.
Migraine Headache Can Last For Days
Once an attack begins the headache and accompanying symptoms can last from a few hours up to several days in duration. Many migraine sufferers are unable to function in normal home and work environments during this time and need quiet and rest to recover. You may feel wonderful once the headache is gone, but many also report feeling confused, dizzy, weak and can remain very sensitive to light and noise afterward.
You Should See A Doctor For Migraine Relief
During an attack it may feel better to rest at home in a safe location, however, in events involving severe pain, sudden head pain, or different patterns of pain than previously experienced, you should talk to your doctor.
